The recent film Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Alvarez, has some references and Easter eggs. One of these involves Ellen Ripley, the famous character played by Sigourney Weaver, and her ship, which appears in two key scenes of the film. These details provide a new perspective on Ripley's history between the events of 1979's Alien and the 1986 sequel Aliens.

Ripley's ship can be seen in the background of a scene involving Kay in Alien: Romulus

In Alien: Romulus, which takes place between the two classic films, Ripley is canonically in cryosleep. The plot follows Rain, played by Cailee Spaeny, and her companions as they face off against a Xenomorph aboard the abandoned space station Renaissance. However, Weta visual effects supervisor Daniel Macarin confirmed in an interview with CinemaBlend that Ripley’s ship, the Narcissus, can be seen on two separate occasions in the film. The first time, it appears docked in the background while Isabela Merced’s character Kay is trapped in a chamber with a Xenomorph. Later, the ship is seen drifting off into space, suggesting it was released from the Renaissance station.

Macarin explained that the placement of Easter eggs is a delicate process, aimed at ensuring that the additions are subtle and don’t detract from the main story. “Every Easter egg has to be done in a very particular way so that it doesn’t take away from the story,” Macarin said. “You’re giving it to the fans who are seeing it multiple times in theaters, and you’re giving them something to think about later.”

The presence of Ripley’s ship in Alien: Romulus doesn’t contradict her story as presented in Aliens. In Ridley Scott's original film, Ripley goes into cryosleep after seemingly eliminating the Xenomorph that had infested her ship, the Nostromo. In James Cameron's sequel, Ripley is discovered and awakened after 57 years of drifting in space. The revelation that Ripley's ship appears in Alien: Romulus suggests that her ship was not simply left adrift, but was recovered and then launched back into space.
