There are only a few months left until the release of Gladiator II, scheduled for November 24, and we are finally starting to receive more and more information about this highly anticipated sequel. Once again directed by Ridley Scott, the film will feature Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Joseph Quinn. The latter recently spoke about his character, Emperor Geta, and the inspirations behind the role: among these, Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus is not included. Gladiator 2, Joseph Quinn talks about the inspirations for his Emperor Geta.

Joseph Quinn, currently busy filming Fantastic Four where he plays Johnny Storm, the Human Torch, in a recent interview for the American magazine Empire explained which actors and roles are behind his interpretation of Emperor Geta. Among the inspirations, Quinn admits to having excluded, for various reasons, Joaquin Phoenix's interpretation of Commodus: "For obvious reasons, Joaquin Phoenix's interpretation was in our thoughts. It was something we almost venerated, but we didn't want to end up making a bad copy."

The British actor revealed that he was inspired by other cinematic villains, such as Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Devian in Mission: Impossible III (2006), or "Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element, where he had that taste of being horrible." Speaking about Quinn’s characters of Emperor Geta and his brother Emperor Caracalla (played by Fred Hechinger), Ridley Scott said he was inspired not only by history but also by the mythology of Rome: “They are probably the equivalent of Romulus and Remus. The two lunatics who formed Rome were suckled by a she-wolf. [Caracalla and Geta] grew up differently but probably had some brain damage.”
