The Russo brothers have been confirmed to direct the next installments of the Avengers saga, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, marking their long-awaited return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After a five-year hiatus from the MCU, Anthony and Joe Russo are set to return to direct two of the most anticipated films of Phase 6. The Russo brothers have been responsible for some of Marvel's biggest hits, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the latter of which became the highest-grossing film in cinema history for a time, surpassed only by the re-release of Avatar in 2021.

This return has been greeted with enthusiasm by many fans and insiders, including director Zack Snyder, known for his work in the DC Universe and recently busy with the Rebel Moon project on Netflix. During an interview on the ReelBlend podcast, Snyder praised the Russos, calling them "extraordinary" and capable of "doing great things". According to Snyder, the return of the Russos represents an opportunity to “revitalize” the MCU, bringing new energy and ideas, despite their style being a guarantee of success for Marvel.
Snyder’s comment about a possible “shake-up” to the MCU thanks to the Russos might seem paradoxical, considering that their return could be seen as a safe choice for Marvel. However, this very security and familiarity could represent the change that the franchise needs, in a period in which Marvel has faced some difficulties with the increase in content production and television management that is not always up to expectations.
Avengers: Doomsday, coming out on May 1, 2026, will mark the beginning of Phase 6 of the MCU and will see the introduction of new heroes and the return of familiar faces to face the fearsome Victor von Doom, played by an amazing Robert Downey Jr. The sixth chapter, Avengers: Secret Wars, coming on May 7, 2027, will take fans into an epic battle against a cosmic threat, taking inspiration from the Marvel comic book event of the same name.
The return of the Russos could represent a turning point for the MCU, bringing the franchise back to the glories of the Infinity Saga era and paving the way for new and exciting stories for the future of superhero cinema.
