In the finale of Agatha All Along, we learn more about Agatha Harkness’s past and the truth about her son Nicky (better known to comic book fans as Nicholas Scratch). Just as Agatha was about to give birth, Death showed up to claim the baby; however, the witch begged for more time and apparently got it by killing the witches. The one night she didn’t, at Nicky’s request, Death came for him, and Agatha, ashamed of her actions, spent hundreds of years killing her fellow witches on the “Witches’ Road” to avoid being reunited with the baby.
There has been much speculation about who the baby’s father might be, and in a new interview, Agatha All Along showrunner Jac Schaeffer hinted that Rio Vidal/Death fathered the child with the show’s protagonist. “I will say that when we were casting, there were times when we were thinking, ‘Does that baby look like Rio? Does that baby look like Aubrey Plaza?’” the writer-director teased. “The fans and viewers, yeah, they’re definitely picking up on our brainwaves.”
Schaeffer added, “I didn’t anticipate that the shippers would be this vocal. You never know how something’s going to end or if people are going to care. The amount of people who care is astounding to me. I hope that the MCU explores more of Agatha and Rio’s story.” This is in line with previous comments about a man not being necessary to father a witch’s child, and the fact that “Rio” had to take her own child to the afterlife adds another tragic dimension to her past romance with Agatha.
There are plenty of stories that could be told with an adult Nicky (especially if he is indeed an “Agent of Mephisto”). However, as Schaeffer points out, most fans are eager to learn more about Agatha and Morte’s past… and to see Plaza reprise her role in the MCU as soon as possible. Notably, given the success of the series, there is already talk of a possible second season, which would make Agatha All Along the first live-action Marvel series since Loki to earn that honor.
