“Aren't you having fun?” Massimo Decimo Meridio asked this in Gladiator, way back in 2000, but judging by the trend of the takings of the sequel that hit theaters next week, the answer seems to be positive even now that 24 hours have passed. Gladiator II is still the best taking of the weekend at the Italian box office. In its second weekend in theaters, the sequel to the cult film directed by Ridley Scott and distributed by Eagle collected 2,123,904 euros from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 November, recording a fairly small drop of 43% compared to last week and the total is now 6,880,125 euros. Let's
remember that the "old" Gladiator with Russell Crowe from 2000 had grossed 11.9 million euros at the Italian box office at the time (a figure not easy to reach with this sequel), then won 5 Oscars and 2 Golden Globes. Behind Gladiator II, the second-best gross of the weekend was The Boy with the Pink Pants (also Eagle). The Italian film based on the dramatic true story of 15-year-old Andrea Spezzacatena, who committed suicide after being bullied and cyberbullied, is continuing to hold up very well and in its third weekend earned another 1,571,797 euros. The total is now 5,405,083 euros: positive word of mouth and work with schools are destined to make these numbers grow further.
Closing the podium is a new release: Wicked (Universal). The film adaptation of the acclaimed Broadway musical opened with a box office of €1,458,635, recording the highest average per copy – of €4,063 – in the ranking. Here too, word of mouth seems to be good, so the numbers are set to rise in the coming weeks. In the United States – where the stage show is very popular – Wicked achieved excellent results with a weekend debut of over $110 million, immediately breaking several records. In addition to Wicked, the other new releases that earned a place in the Top 10 of the Italian box office of the week are: Naples – New York by Gabriele Salvatores (01 Distribution), which opened with €919,386;
the Italian comedy Group Therapy (Warner) with €509,670; the biopic directed by Johnny Depp starring Riccardo Scamarcio Modì – Three Days on the Wings of Madness (Medusa/Be Water) with 150,441 euros. Overall, the weekend of November 21-24, 2024 was worth 9,153,015 euros at the box office for 1,253,663 admissions. Numbers down 10% compared to last weekend and in line (only -1%) with those of the same weekend in 2023 when the top positions in the ranking were occupied by the very long tail of There's Another Tomorrow (3.1 million euros), Napoleon (2.9 million) and the prequel of The Hunger Games (1 million).
