As development on the sequel finally begins to pick up pace, Melissa Barrera shares an exciting update on Ready or Not 2. The original film, written by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy and directed by Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, revolved around a bride whose in-laws kick her out on her wedding night as part of a satanic ritual to maintain their wealth. After rumors of a sequel in early 2024, it was confirmed in October of that year that Ready or Not 2 was moving forward with the entire creative team returning, including star Samara Weaving.
During a recent interview with ComicBook.com for her monster rom-com Your Monster, Barrera was asked about the possibility of reuniting with Radio Silence for Ready or Not 2 after they collaborated on Abigail. While the actress noted that she hasn’t had any official conversations with Radio Silence about joining the horror sequel, she does know “a little bit” about what’s to come from the film and expressed her excitement for the team to return after another director was initially considered for the film. Check out what Barrera had to say below:
I haven’t. I’m very excited because the last time I spoke to them about Ready or Not, they had no intention of directing it. So I’m very happy that they’re back on board because who better to do it than them? It’s a very emotional story. I know a little bit about the second film and it’s very cool.
What Barrera’s Comments Mean for Ready or Not 2
The fact that Barrera said she had a hunch about Ready or Not 2 the last time she spoke to Radio Silence seems to indicate that it was during the press cycle for Abigail. The vampire horror-comedy came out in April, while news that Escape Room’s Adam Robitel was in talks to direct the sequel first surfaced in March, which would be in line with the typical timing for studios and talent to hold interviews and events to promote a new release a month in advance.
However, the possibility of an Abigail and Ready or Not 2 crossover has been floated since the first film came out, most notably thanks to the Easter egg of a member of the latter film’s Le Domas family being seen in the vampire flick’s mansion. Horror fans have also shared their hopes for Barrera and Weaving to team up after the latter served as the opening killer in Scream VI, while Abigail’s smaller but modest box office gross has led others to hope for the former’s character to continue in the sequel.
One of the few obstacles standing in the way of a proper crossover between Abigail and Ready or Not 2 is the different studios that own the rights to each film. While Radio Silence and Vinson Films produced both films, Universal distributed the former while Fox Searchlight distributed the latter, which likely requires some studio shuffling to include Barrera’s Joey in the upcoming sequel. That hasn’t stopped Barrera from holding out hope for a reunion with Weaving, sharing the following with Screen Rant in May:
Yes, we need to do a movie with both of them. I would love to. I met her while she was filming Scream VI, but I wasn’t even on set when she was filming because the whole beginning was filmed separately. I had a week off and went back to Mexico. But yeah, she’s amazing, she’s an amazing actress and a great friend of mine. And Matt and Tyler’s too, so that would be awesome.
