Scream 7: Original Ghostface Matthew Lillard Would Return to Franchise, Even Though He Thinks Sixth Film Is Too Violent

Matthew Lillard played one of the original Ghostface, Stu Macher, alongside Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in Wes Craven’s Scream, and while the character seemingly met a violent end, fans continue to speculate and theorize that the crazed killer could return in the upcoming Scream 7.

Stu appeared to have been killed off for good during the film’s climax, but we’ve seen plenty of people survive what are supposed to be fatal injuries in the franchise, so who knows? For his part, Lillard has said that he believes Stu is still alive and would be happy to reprise the role if it was something fans wanted to see. “Stud is definitely alive, right? My character, Stu, is definitely alive. I would love to. If it made sense for the franchise. If Kevin [Williamson] liked it. Then yeah. Obviously.”

Williamson is set to direct the next film in the long-running horror franchise, but it remains to be seen whether Lillard will return. In a more recent interview with Games Radar+, the actor praised the subsequent films, but felt the last one, Scream VI, was “too violent.” “I think it’s in a good place. I think [the franchise] being back in Kevin Williamson’s hands is awesome. I love what [Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin] were doing before. Nothing against them. I actually thought they were taking a really exciting route.”

“I thought the movie got too violent,” he added. “I think VI was, like… I don’t think Ghostface ever needs a gun. I think the movies are… it’s all trying to repeat what we did in the first movie in a lot of ways. Like, a maniacal monologue at the end. That’s really hard to do. I hope Kevin takes it in a whole new, bold, exciting direction so we can find different colors and joys.” Since the first Scream movie is arguably the most brutally violent (remember the opening sequence with Drew Barrymore?) of the franchise, Lillard’s comments have raised eyebrows among some fans, though some think that Ghostface should stick to knives as his weapons of choice.

After missing the last film, Neve Campbell recently announced that she will be returning as Sidney Prescott for the upcoming seventh installment. “Sidney Prescott is coming back!” Campbell wrote on Instagram when her return was made official. “It has always been a blast and an honor to play Sidney in the Scream movies. My appreciation for these films and what they have meant to me has never waned. I am so happy and proud to say that I have been asked, in the most respectful way, to bring Sidney back to the screen and I couldn’t be more thrilled.”

Campbell and new director Kevin Williamson recently announced that the seventh film, which has apparently been called Scream 7 (ditching the Roman numerals) for the time being, will hit theaters on February 27, 2026.

Plot details are still under wraps, but rumors say the story will revolve around Sidney (Campbell), Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and a few new characters defending Sid’s family from some sort of Ghostface cult. There have been conflicting reports about how many masked maniacs will be targeting our heroes, but we’ve heard that there will be a “big time jump” after the events of the last film, presumably to allow Sidney’s kids to reach slasher-film-friendly age.
