While a release date hasn’t been officially announced yet, Disney+’s What If…? season 3 is set to debut on December 22, and now we have some exciting updates courtesy of Marvel Animation’s Matt Chauncey, who serves as Head of Story for the third seasons of What If…? and X-Men ’97. Chauncey, who was on a panel at LightBox Expo (via LaughingPlace.com), confirmed that the animated anthology series’ third season will not only introduce another new character created specifically for the show (following season 2’s Kahhori) but will also feature the “long-awaited” MCU debut of a “famous Marvel character.”
No names were given, but Chauncey revealed that he “got dream casting” for the new character. As for the other mystery hero or villain, a recent rumor claimed that Storm will be a part of season three. While the fan-favorite mutant has made numerous appearances in live-action and animation (most recently in X-Men ’97), this would technically be Ororo Munroe’s debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Storm hasn’t been confirmed, but a recent rumor claimed that the weather witch will become “worthy” and wield Thor’s mighty hammer, Mjölnir.
Chauncey also revealed that season three will include a musical episode inspired by the screwball comedies of 1930s Hollywood. “It’s a huge undertaking in animation,” he noted, “especially the challenge of coordinating the dance and the movement. But Marvel has really pulled out all the stops and it’s going to be spectacular.” One character that has been confirmed to appear is Sam Wilson’s version of Captain America, which we haven’t seen since the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Former writer A.C. Bradley recently revealed that the show couldn’t use Wilson initially, as he hadn’t been finalized as Captain America in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier at the time the scripts were being written. “We couldn’t even do Sam Wilson’s Captain America because we didn’t know when he was coming out,” Bradley explained. “Again, we were writing season 2 while The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was on hiatus and scripts were being rewritten because of other things. We don’t know when something’s going to air. So, we couldn’t touch him because we’re not allowed to bring him in… It makes sense, you let the character live in live-action first and then you go play in the multiverse.”
“Season 2 of ‘What If…?’ continues the journey as The Watcher guides viewers across the vast multiverse, introducing new and familiar faces from across the MCU,” the season 2 synopsis reads. “The series challenges, reimagines, and twists classic Marvel Cinematic moments with an incredible voice cast that includes a host of stars reprising their iconic roles.”
