Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are once again close to an unexpected phase of total breakup regarding the cinematic future of Spider-Man.

Tony Vinciquerra, president and CEO of Sony Pictures, worried fans and insiders during a long interview with Variety in which he spoke about the flops of Sony's Spider-Man Universe and the now deteriorated relationship with Marvel Studios. In particular, Vinciquerra said he was sorry for the failure of their Spider-Man Universe, partly admitting the blame for a series of box office flops, the latest of which was Kraven – The Hunter.
At the same time, the CEO accused critics in general, guilty in his opinion of having deliberately sunk Sony's films before even seeing them, a clear reference to Morbius and Madame Web, both of which came out with broken bones at the Box Office, but protagonists of a second life in the digital market. The CEO then closed this topic by stating that, at least for the moment, Sony will put on hold those spin-off projects dedicated to the various villains of the Spider-Man universe announced in unsuspecting times. Even the sequels to Morbius and Venom? This is not known at the moment.
Spider-Man | Sony and Marvel at loggerheads
But let's get to the heart of Vinciquerra's interview, namely the new quarrel between Sony and Marvel over the rights to Spider-Man. Well, like a bolt from the blue, the CEO revealed that the relationship between the two Hollywood realities has now practically deteriorated and that for the moment the future of Spider-Man at the cinema is aimed at Sony projects, and not Marvel ones (is the road that led to Spider-Man 4 of the MCU therefore closed?).
Here Vinciquerra referred to some negotiations that went badly between Sony and Marvel in the last period. Therefore, Spider-Man: Far From Home could have been the last time the famous superhero appeared in the MCU: “For now, the door is closed.” In another statement, the CEO hinted that the character is ready to be part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe: “We tried to see if there was a way to solve it. The people at Marvel are amazing, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand, we have some really amazing people too. Kevin Feige didn’t do all the work alone.”
But what happened between Sony and Marvel? Well, the rumors seem to be more and more insistent, and for the most part, they would concern Sony’s continuous requests to include Spider-Man in their universe, requests that were rejected each time by Kevin Feige and the company. Marvel’s incessant wall seems to have led Sony, therefore, to say enough and at the same time become aware of the fact that the famous superhero could lead their franchise toward new triumphs in the future.
Has Spider-Man really said goodbye to the MCU at this point? Well, it seems so today, but Hollywood is certainly an industry that has always been supported by big dollars, and those of Disney (owner of Marvel Studios) could also change the cards on the table, and therefore convince Tony Vinciquerra to sell once and for all the complete rights to the Spider-Man universe, monetize the enormous capital and focus on something else. Science fiction? We can't say for sure, so we'll leave you with the next chapter of a soap opera that has now lasted an eternity.
